En el siglo XVIII un conde llega de La Habana a su azucarera en el campo de una visita de inspección, la fecha de la cual corresponde al comienzo de la semana santa. Se le ocurre hacer invitar a doce de los esclavos a cenar a su mesa al jueves santo. Lo hace a pesar de las advertencias del mayoral del ingenio. La tertulia entre el señor y los doce esclavos se demora de modo que lleguemos a conocer a cada uno de los trece personajes. La serie de desgracias que se desencadena a causa del capricho del conde no es difícil de prever no obstante se desarrolla cuidadosamente. Por medio de los acontecimientos que siguen se descubre la sinceridad de la fe del conde—o la falta de ella.
